Kara Golux has been a licensed massage therapist since 1994, trained in the modalities of Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Shiatsu and Chi Nei Tsang. A graduate of both the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy and the Ohashi Institute of Shiatsu in New York City, Kara's approach combines the traditional eastern medical view of health as a balance of energy flow with the western scientific understanding of anatomy and physiology. Highly influenced by the fascial release work of Rolfing and the neuromuscular re-patterning work of Ideokinesis, Kara's work addresses bound connective tissue, freeing the body from chronic patterns of pain and misalignment, re-establishing ease of movement. Continuing studies at the Chi Nei Tsang Institute in Berkeley, CA with Gilles Marin has deepened Kara's appreciation for a holistic approach, one that integrates the many aspects of being and knowing, and honors one's spirit as the guide in one's healing process. Although Kara has often worked with artists and athletes recovering from injury or seeking peak performance, she greatly enjoys working with folks from all walks of life, whether the goal is stress reduction, increased vitality, recovery from pain/injury, or simply a deep sense of well-being.
In addition to her work with hands-on healing modalities, Kara has been practicing yoga since 1987 and teaching since 2008. Blending both dynamic and restorative approaches, Kara's teaching is informed by studies in a range of Hatha Yoga styles, including Iyengar, Astanga, Kripalu, Yin Yoga, Insight Yoga and Shadow Yoga. Initially a cross-training for her work as a professional dancer, then a path of spiritual integration, yoga remains for Kara the primary method for restoring the innate qualities of vibrancy, spaciousness and clarity to body, heart and mind. With extensive studies in anatomy, physiology, ideokinesis, and the five element system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Kara invites a playful inquiry toward rediscovering somatic patterns of support, suppleness and flow. To assist in the cultivation of the subtle body, Kara incorporates Buddhist meditation practices to anchor attention and deepen concentration. If requested, individual yoga sessions may include hands-on therapeutic bodywork. Kara delights in sharing the expansive stillness and energetic brightness available through the practice of yoga.
